Georgetown College is experiencing one of the most progressive eras in its history. From construction of a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Center to a renewed commitment to Christian values through the Marshall Center for Christian Ministry, Georgetown is poised to enter the 21st century as one of the brightest liberal arts colleges in the region.

Chartered in 1829 as a liberal arts college affiliated with the Kentucky Baptist Convention, Georgetown is dedicated to academic excellence in a Christian environment. This four-year, coeducational institution is located 12 miles north of Lexington in the heart of the scenic Kentucky Bluegrass. Dr. William H. Crouch Jr. became the 23rd president of the college in 1991.

The campus is primarily residential and composed of 1,302 undergraduate students and 317 graduate students. The undergraduates come from 100 Kentucky counties, 28 states and seven foreign countries, selecting fields of study from 38 majors and 25 minors. The college is noted for its high acceptance rates to medical, law and graduate schools.

The new Anne Wright Wilson Fine Arts Building opened in the fall of 1996 and features one of the largest galleries in Central Kentucky, enabling the college to host world-class exhibits.

Construction continues on the new Anna Ashcraft Ensor Learning Resource Center. Plans call for the LRC to be completed by the fall of 1998. When finished, the building will encompass more than 55,000 square feet and represent the largest investment Georgetown College has made in a single facility.

Georgetown was one of the first colleges in Kentucky to complete a Technology Infrastructure Project that allowed the campus to be completely wired for Internet access, entertainment and educational cable TV, voice mail and worldwide e-mail available in each residence hall room, and voice/video/data access from every classroom.

Long known for its academic excellence, the college continues to attract award-winning faculty and students. Since 1989, the college has had seven Fulbright Scholars. The average ACT score is the highest since the college began keeping records. And the Georgetown Varsity Academic Team, competing against much larger state universities, won the state championship in 1996 for the second consecutive year.

The first Cincinnati Bengals Summer Training Camp at the Georgetown College Athletic Complex was a success. Average daily attendance was 3,000 with nearly 12,000 attending the Intrasquad Scrimmage on July 26, a Bengals’ training camp record. In addition to fan support, the camp attracted more than 200 media representatives from 75 media outlets as well as many high school and college coaches. The naming of Rawlings Stadium was made possible by Georgetown alumnus Carl Shields, who is chief executive officer of Rawlings Sporting Goods. Applebee’s Field was sponsored by the Applebee’s restaurant franchise. The new Athletic Complex, which was finished in July, is now in use by Georgetown students, the Scott County community, and regional businesses and organizations.

Georgetown is listed by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 159 national liberal arts colleges. In addition, Georgetown is included in Peterson’s Competitive Colleges and in Barron’s Best Buys in College Education.

The college offers nearly 100 opportunities for involvement on campus, including student government, a drama/theatre troupe, a student newspaper and radio station, three national sororities, four national fraternities, one local fraternity and 14 intercollegiate athletic teams.

Two of the most innovative groups are the President’s Ambassadors program, which encourages exemplary college junior and seniors to become involved in leadership training opportunities and in the development and promotion of the college, and the Presidential Mentorship Program, which provides leadership and personal enrichment experiences for selected Scott and Perry county high school juniors who are personally mentored by President Crouch.

In addition, the Georgetown College Center for Ethics and Leadership is helping students cultivate an understanding of volunteerism and ethical decision-making, strengthen leadership abilities and explore career development activities. The Marshall Center for Christian Ministry is helping students prepare for Christian leadership and service in the global mission of the 21st century.

Georgetown’s distinguished alumni include five Rhodes Scholars, 34 college and university presidents, two Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winners, and numerous others who provide distinctive leadership in business, medicine, law, education and the arts.
